Even
though 50% of all marriages in the US will end in divorce, very few
people are prepared for the havoc it can cause, especially when it
comes to their finances. Worst of all going through a divorce can be
so emotionally draining that you may not realize the consequences of
your decisions until well after the final papers have been signed.
Once this occurs there is often little, if anything, that can be done
to reverse them.
(See the sample case below.)
That's why it is just as important to prepare for your
financial divorce as it is to prepare for your legal one.

SAMPLE CASE:
Spouse A came to us with a settlement
proposal from Spouse B and asked for a second opinion before
signing the final papers. We analyzed the proposal and this is what we
found (see Exhibit A).
While
this settlement appeared to be okay because they were both starting
out at the same level, the long-term effect on their lives was
dramatically different. So, we were asked to propose another
settlement option that might be more 'financially fair' to both
spouses. The chart below shows the impact of the new settlement
scenario we developed. The result--both spouses have a chance to
thrive. (see Exhibit B)
